This drawing represents her getting scolded and insulted at the hands of her crooked and venomous family members. The blue hand in the sky represents larger society. She told me that the floating mouth with the ciggie is her husband – cool, detached and enjoys bullying people. The baby hand and mother hand represent our love and the care that is needed so that life can grow. And finally the containers of soup and rice in the speech bubble is apparently what I said to my mother as a kid. In Chinese, when you say ‘to give someone rice and soup’, it can mean to serve them shit and piss, in other words I told her to yell back and stand up against those who verbally abused her.
